TOPIC - WISE DETAILS
SECTION A - READING (Marks : 15)
A1 & A2 Two unseen
passages of total 250 words with a variety of
questions including 3 marks for vocabulary. Each
passage should not exceed 125 words.
The prose passages will be factual and
discursive in naure. Question will test
vocabulary and local and higher level
comprehension such as drawing inferences,
conclusion.
SECTION B - WRITING (Marks : 20)
B1. Letter writing - one
letter based on provided verbal stimulus and
context.
Types of
letters : Informal : Personal such as to family
and friends,
Formal :
Letters of complaint, Enquiry, Requests,
Applications.
( Maximum words 100 - Marks
: 10)
B2. A short
writing task (controlled and guided ) based on a
verbal and / or visual stimuli. Such as reports,
notices, story. (Maximum words 40-Marks : 04)
B3. A short writing task based on verbal
and / or visual stimuli. (Maximum words 80-Marks
: 06)
SECTION C - GRAMMAR (Marks : 20)
A variety of short
questions involving the use of particular
structures within a context. Test types used
will include, gap-filling, sentence completion,
sentence reordering, dialogue completion and
sentence transformation. The Grammar syllabus
for this class will include the following areas
for teaching.
1. Use of non-finites.
2. Sentence connectors :
as, since, while, than just because, just,
until.
3. Clauses with
what, where and how.
4.
Past Tense.
5. Modals :
can, could, may, must, might
SECTION D - TEXT BOOKS (Marks : 45)
The two books namely,
Language Through Literature, English Reader-II
and Supplementary Reader-II will be the
prescribed books for reading.
1. ENGLISH READER - II ( Marks : 30)
Prose
D1 & D2 Two extracts
from different prose lessons included in English
Reader - II of maximum 200 words in all.
These extracts chosen from
the different lessons will be literary and
discursive in nature.
Each extract will have weightage of 5
marks. One mark in each extract will test
vocabulary 4 marks in each passage will be used
for testing local and global comprehension
besides a question in interpretation.

One question, extrapolative in nature based on
any one of the prose lessons from English Reader
- II to be answered in about 100 words.
POETRY (Marks : 10)

& D5 Two short answer type questions on
interpretation of themes and ideas contained in
the poems to be answered in about 30-40 words
each. (Marks: 6)
D6 & D7 Two questions
on appreciation of the poems. (Marks : 4)
2. SUPPLEMENTARY READER -
II (Marks : 15)
D8 One question on the
lessons from the Supplementary Reader - II to
interpret, evaluate and analyse characters, plot
or situations occuring in the lessons to be
answered in about 100 words. ( Marks : 7)

& D10 Two short answer type questions of
interpretative and evaluative nature based on
lessons. (Marks: 4)
D11 & D12 Two short
answer type questions based on factual aspects
of the lessons. (Marks:
