'Music is my lifeblood'
For Himanshu, music is lifeblood. He grew up in a family that had music, art and literature aplenty. He had his formative training in Hindustani classical music from Ustad Ishtiyaq Husain Khan of Rampur Sahaswan Gharana.
According to him an unfortunate phase of his musical journey was when kite, football, cricket and any other outdoor sport took precedence over the training regime. He learnt little and classical music became a tiresome practice despite supportive parents. Then his uncle, the Late Mohan Upreti - a folk theatre and music legend - took over the charge and his interest in 'music as a wholesome companion' and not a regimented discipline grew. He developed a deep interest in folk music and the roots of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa became clear and logical. Few important lessons from teachers like Smt. Shanti Sharma and later Shri Madhup Mudgal of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, came as a blessing. Classical music became a friend.
Gradually, music as a main source of interest and serious hobby became part of Himanshu's existence, which meant lot of stage shows, and a fair bit of background singing for advertisements and short films' opening scores. This was the phase when he did a lot of Kumaoni folk operas with Parvatiya Kala Kendra, an organization started by his uncle, Mohan Upreti. The experience further enriched Himanshu's musical base.
Mass communication happened by accident. Fortunate enough to be part of Jamia Millia Islamia's campus life, Himanshu chanced upon the Mass Communication Institute one evening. The studio, new cameras, Lights, flashing consoles attracted him and his goal in life became clear. It was two years of learning with loads of fun thrown in. He started his career with a hope of doing 'meaningful work' and in the process change the world. More than two decades later he realizes that the world stayed where it was and he himself has changed - chastened but wiser.
Music is now a constant background score in Himanshu's life. He divides his time between being an Indian Ocean band member, making corporate films and documentaries, doing research on Kumaon's fading cultural legacy, and singing, both on- and off-stage.
